The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud of its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is running a national programme that is creating jobs, addressing skills gaps, and strengthening South Africa's creative industries — in line with the SEF's overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative is recruiting and training participants, matching them with host organisations, and has already placed 1 500 workers across the country — surpassing its original target of 1 000. NEFCISA is delivered through a network of 20 host organisations spanning five provinces, who are actively hosting participants and contributing to work for the common good across South Africa's creative and cultural industries. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

Music In Africa Gender @ Work is a three-year training programme aimed at upskilling and increasing the participation of female professionals in the African music sector. Launched by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in April 2019, the programme is connected to the MIAF’s ACCES music conference – a pan-African event held in a different African country every year. This connection enables the programme to reach new participants in a different African country every year. The programme marks the beginning of a more concerted effort by the Foundation to support the participation and inclusion of women in all facets of its programmes and the music sector in Africa as a whole. Over the three years, the programme will aim to address gender imbalances in the sector through training, lobbying, facilitating knowledge exchange and dialogues that foster the interest of women. For cultural and creative practitioners and organisations operating in southern Africa, access to funding remains a major challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a massive impact on government policy, spending and the economy in general, and has seen spending on culture being moved further down the list of priorities. Further, the cultural and creative industries repeatedly cite four main areas where investment is needed for growth, which are increased visibility, mobility including access to new markets, finance and support structures.

Spotify extends AI fan remix tool to independent artists through Merlin deal

Spotify has signed a licensing agreement with Merlin, the global digital licensing partner for independent record labels and distributors, to extend its upcoming fan-made covers and remixing tool to participating independent artists and songwriters.

Merlin CEO Charlie Lexton.

The tool, which Spotify has described as being powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI), will allow fans to create covers and remixes of songs from participating artists. It is expected to launch as a paid add-on for Spotify Premium subscribers, with the company saying it will provide an additional revenue stream for participating rights holders.

The agreement, announced on 4 August, follows a deal Spotify reached with Universal Music Group (UMG) in May. Until now, the initiative had been focused on UMG’s catalogue.

Spotify and UMG have said the tool will be based on the principles of “consent, credit and compensation”, with participating artists and songwriters retaining control over whether their music is included.

“This agreement with Merlin ensures participating artists are credited and compensated, and that every creation drives listeners back to the original work,” Spotify senior vice-president and global head of music Charlie Hellman said. “We’re proud to extend this model to the independent community, and we look forward to welcoming more partners as we continue to build.”

Under the Merlin agreement, artists represented by labels covered by the organisation’s Spotify licensing deal will have the option to participate in the initiative.

“Giving our members’ artists the choice to make their music available as part of this exciting technology, while ensuring the opportunity to participate in an additional revenue stream, is exactly what Merlin is here to do,” Merlin CEO Charlie Lexton said.

“Spotify’s respect for our members’ and their artists’ rights is exemplary, making our decision to work on this project an easy one,” he added.

Spotify first announced plans for what it called “artist-first AI music products” in October 2025, in partnership with UMG, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group, Merlin and Believe. At the time, the companies described the initiative as a plan to pursue licensing arrangements rather than a series of completed agreements.

As of 4 August, Sony Music Group, Warner Music Group and Believe had not announced separate licensing agreements for the fan-made covers and remixing tool.

The Merlin deal comes as Spotify reported its second-quarter 2026 financial results, including the addition of 300 million Premium subscribers, taking the service above that milestone for the first time.

Merlin represents independent labels across more than 70 countries and says its members account for about 15% of the global recorded music market. The organisation renewed its global licensing agreement with Spotify in September 2025.

The agreement is also the latest in a series of AI-related licensing deals involving Merlin. In January, the organisation licensed its members' recordings to AI music platform Udio, while it reached an agreement with ElevenLabs for its Eleven Music platform in August 2025.

The organisation has also negotiated licensing agreements with major digital platforms including Apple, Meta and YouTube.

The fan-made tool forms part of Spotify’s broader strategy of introducing paid features alongside its standard Premium subscription. In February 2025, Bloomberg reported that the company was considering a higher-priced “Music Pro” tier, potentially costing up to $5.99 more per month, with AI-powered remixing among the features under consideration.
