8 March event to hear SA and Ugandan women’s stories

The event will begin at 10pm CAT and forms part of a newly launched campaign called #HearHerEmpowerHer. It will be hosted by well-known British journalist, broadcaster and BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour presenter Anita Rani.

The organisation said the programme would feature “inspirational women who lead our projects in Uganda, Women in Leadership, and Sikh Women’s Aid in the UK”. The short film, which was directed by actress Saffron Burrows, features a story of a woman from The Circle project partner Nonceba. There will also be a musical performance by The Circle ally Jack Savoretti.

The Circle was founded by Scottish musician and activist Annie Lennox in 2008 and aims to raise funds to support the world’s most marginalised women.

“International Women’s Day is a crucial moment in the calendar for all who wish to create a fairer world for women and girls,” The Circle said. “It is also a wonderful moment to gather in solidarity with fellow changemakers and celebrate the power of standing together.”

The Circle and its partners have worked to reach and transform the lives of more than 60 000 women and girls with funding, resources, skills, support, sanctuary, and the tools to rebuild their lives.

“We are asking you to listen to women across the world, hear their stories and take action. Only through listening will we be able to create the change we need for all women to live without fear of violence and poverty,” The Circle said about the #HearHerEmpowerHer campaign.
