African acts named in Dazed 100 class of 2023

“Over the years, the Dazed 100 has championed the movers, shakers and trailblazers in the creative industry and this year’s list is no different,” Kamara said. “I’m constantly reminded of all the global talent that we’re so lucky to both watch from afar and collaborate with across our platforms.”

In Ghana, SuperJazzClub is widely praised as trailblazers of the future sound for their ability to blend traditional local sounds with global rhythms. Odumodublvck is among the biggest Nigerian breakout stars of 2023, while Tyla, best known for her viral hit ‘Water,’ is up for a Grammy award next year after scoring her first nominations in the Best African Performance category.

Speaking to Music in Africa about the feat, following a recent tour of Europe, SuperJazz Club noted that the accolade is a “testament to our dedication to pushing boundaries in music. It’s an honour to have our work recognised by a platform that celebrates creativity and experimentation. We’re thrilled to share our music with a broader audience and continue evolving our sound.”

Meanwhile, Ghanaian singer Amaarae has also made Dazed’s list of 20 best albums of the year with her second album Fountain Baby. The project ranked at №10, alongside albums by other international acts like SZA and Lana Del Ray.

“Across its 14 tracks, Amaarae convenes her alt-rock, pop, and afrobeat influences, retelling various encounters of love, drugs and religion in that distinctive purr,” Dazed said about the project. “It’s the most self-assured we’ve ever heard her sound, and who can blame her when she’s clearly having this much fun.”
