Apple Music honours SA artists with Amaqhawe campaign

Amaqhawe (which translates to hero in Xhosa and legend in Zulu) is a programme that seeks to spotlight the legacies of iconic South African artists who have inspired generations of musicians and continue to shape the country’s vibrant music scene.

The programme features six exclusive guest playlists curated by legendary South African musicians, including Ringo Madlingozi, Letta Mbulu, J’Something, Karen Zoid, Slikour and Francois van Coke. These playlists offer a personal glimpse into the artists’ favourite songs and influences, showcasing the diversity and depth of South African music.

“Heritage for me is weighted in the past,” J’Something said. “It’s a culmination of stories, thoughts, beliefs and characteristics that are then passed down to us. Thereafter comes the important part, how do we as individuals relate to our heritage, study it and break it apart so that we can then create our own stories, thoughts, beliefs and characteristics for us to pass down. This is why music plays such a pivotal role in shaping culture. These are some of my favourite South African creatives at the moment.”

In addition to the guest playlists, Apple Music has created a flagship Amaqhawe playlist featuring some of the biggest songs in South African music history, spanning decades and genres. From Brenda Fassie to Miriam Makeba, Lebo Mathosa and Malaika, the playlist is a testament to the power of music to unite and inspire.

The initiative aims to celebrate the country’s musical heritage and highlight the influence of these legendary artists on the next generation of musicians.

Ringo Madlingozi said: “These are some of the songs which speak to the rhythm of my heart and my wish is that while listening to these eclectic sounds you feel the power of the music and how it unifies us.”
