Apple Music names four African artists in Up Next Programme

The Up Next programme has previously featured international acts who have gone on to achieve global recognition. Apple Music editors choose artists based on their originality, cultural impact and potential to reach wider audiences.

Kenyan hip hop artist Toxic Lyrikali, known for his “mboka doba” (music is a job) ethos, was selected to represent East Africa. He recently released ‘Backbencher’, a dancehall-inspired single that follows earlier tracks ‘Chinje’ and ‘Thugnificent’. “I am so happy and honoured to be selected for Up Next East Africa,” he told Apple Music.

Representing Ghana, Raevin combines Afrobeats, Afropop and highlife into an Afro-fusion sound. He first gained attention with his feature on King Promise’s hit single ‘Terminator’ and has released his debut EP Feelings of Raevin, produced by Grammy-nominated producer Killbeatz. “Being named one of Apple Music’s Up Next artists, especially representing Ghana, means the world to me,” he said.

From Nigeria, Efue has been recognised for her songwriting and blend of Afro-soul, Afrobeats, house and soul. Her debut EP Memorabilia is a five-track collection written as letters, and includes the singles ‘Beauty and The Beat’ and ‘Wanna Know’. “I am grateful to Apple Music for this opportunity and super excited to exceed all your expectations,” she said.

South African musician Trillion Petals, the solo project of Alison Rachel from the band HONEYMOAN, has released her debut EP Hill After Pale Hill. The record features the lead single Lucky Girl Mantra and combines analogue experimentation with indie-rock influences. “I’m thrilled to be chosen for Up Next South Africa,” she said.

The four artists now join a growing list of musicians previously spotlighted by Apple Music through the Up Next playlist, which remains open to all genres and aims to introduce new voices to a global audience.
