Botswana mourns kwaito artist Thabo Mapetla Ntirang

According to local media, Mapetla succumbed to injuries sustained during the accident. The news about Mapetla’s death was confirmed by his family on social media.

“With heavy hearts, we, the family of Thabo Mapetla Ntirang, share this announcement of the untimely passing of our beloved talented musician, loving father, son, brother and uncle,” a statement reads. “Thabo lost his life in a tragic car accident in the early hours of this morning [3 March].

“Thabo’s presence in our lives will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to live through us all. His passion for music brought joy to countless individuals, and his memory will forever be etched in our hearts. We are currently working on funeral arrangements, and further details will be shared in due course. During this difficult time, we kindly ask for privacy and respect as we grieve the loss of our dear Thabo.”

Music In Africa spoke to local artists, who conveyed their condolences.

“Thabo Mapetla Ntirang has been into the industry for over a decade,” jazz singer Trinity Mpho said. “He has been a role model to many and has contributed immensely towards the development of Botswana arts, we have lost an icon, a free-spirited, loving and great artist. He was loved by many. May your soul rest in peace Skhokho.”

Kearoma Rantao said: “He was a great brother. Very humble and one of Botswana’s best. He will be missed dearly and it’s going to be hard to fill his shoes. The nation has lost a star.”

Mapetla was fondly referred to by fans as Mapetla Skhokho. Aside from his musical talents, he excelled as an actor, songwriter, entrepreneur, record producer and TV presenter. His infectious energy and vibrant personality made him loved in the entertainment industry.

With his diverse skills and innovative spirit, Mapetla contributed significantly to shaping the local music scene. Some of his songs include ‘Pelo’, ‘Thaba Tshweu’ and ‘Gumba Fire’.
