Call for applications: Arts Research Africa postdoc fellowship

The call is also open to candidates with an interdisciplinary focus in arts research as well as post doctorate fellows who are working in the field of African music.

The one-year postdoctoral fellowship will begins in September. The value of the fellowship is R200 000 ($11 400).

Applicants who would like to be considered should submit the following to Zanele Madiba at [email protected] before 30 June:

• CV.
• Academic transcript
• Letter of motivation of not more than two typed/printed A4 pages.

The CV should provide the following information:

• Conferences attended (indicate names of presentations given).
• Recent community service activities.
• Prizes won.
• Peer-reviewed publications.
• Leadership positions held.
• Languages spoken.
• Citizenship.

The applicant's letter of motivation should address the following:

• A description of the PhD research and its contribution to arts research.
• Your current activities (e.g. completing PhD student, postdoc fellow, lecturer, unemployed).
• A brief description of the research that applicants intend to undertake during the ARA postdoctoral fellowship at WSOA. Please explicitly address how the proposed research will advance artistic research in South Africa or Africa.

Depending on the nature of the research, the successful recipient of the ARA postdoctoral fellowship will be expected to produce at least two peer-reviewed publications during the year of the residency (or the creative research equivalent, or a combination of publication(s) and creative work). Ideally, the research should be published in journals that are found in the ISS index of journals. If there is a particular reason why it is more appropriate to publish the work in local journals, then they should be journals ‘accredited’ with the Department of Higher Education and Training.

The recipient of the fellowship is also expected to contribute to the research ethos of WSOA. This contribution may involve participation in the school’s journal of creative research (www.ellipses.org.za), postgraduate supervision, and participation in seminars, symposia, and colloquia in the school’s ARA programme.
