Call for applications: Arts research grants for Arabic countries

RAP aims to encourage academics and art practitioners to undertake research in the arts with a broad aim of empowering the production of different kinds of knowledge. It encourages dialogue between academia and practice.

The programme also supports research in all art practices across disciplinary boundaries and methodological approaches on key themes of concern to and in the Arab region.

Successful applicants will be awarded grants in the following categories:

• Individual researchers will receive up to $15 000.
• Teams of researchers or collectives will receive up to $25 000.
• Institutions will receive up to $35 000.

Who can apply?

AFAC and ACSS particularly invite interdisciplinary proposals that link the arts, humanities and social sciences.

Applicants from the following African countries can submit their entries: Algeria, Mauritania, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Morocco, Djibouti, Egypt and Libya.

RAP is open to receive applications from researchers from the arts and humanities disciplines including:

• Musicology
• Art history
• Comparative literature
• Contemporary art
• Curatorial studies
• Fine arts
• Graphic design
• Architecture
• Languages and literature
• Folklore studies
• Media studies
• Performance arts
• Visual arts

Requirements

Individual applicant should:

• Be a holder of a PhD in one of the eligible disciplines.
• Be an art practitioner with at least 10 years of practical experience.

Interested groups and institutions should:

• Have up to four research team members.
• Have a team structure, which may take one of two forms:

• A PhD holder (principal investigator) in one of the disciplines or fields described above, and up to three team members including (at least) MA degree holders and/or art practitioners.
• An art practitioner with at least 10 years of experience after graduation (principal investigator) and up to three team members including (at least) MA degree holders and/or art practitioners.

Project eligibility

Quantitative and qualitative projects are eligible and mixed-method approaches are encouraged. Selected projects will run from 15 December 2019 to 15 December 2021.

RAP supports both new and ongoing projects, which may include:

• Preliminary or pilot phases of a project.
• Longer-term projects combining fieldwork and analysis.
• Analysis and write-up of previously concluded data collection.
• Extensions of previous projects that seek to bring in new cases and examples.
• Comparative projects extended to include further locations.
