Call for applications: Felabration 2020 art and dance competitions

Afrobics Dance Competition

The dance contest, dubbed the Afrobics Dance Competition, was started to “promote the late Fela Kuti’s music and legacy and also promote the Afrobics style of dance pioneered by Yeni Kuti,” the organisers said. It is open to non-professional dancers and gives them a platform to exhibit their skills.

To enter, interested persons can download and complete the form here. The completed form should then be emailed as an attachment with the subject line 'Felabration 2020 Afrobics Dance Contest'. The email must be sent along with an audio-visual recording of themselves performing dance routines to their preferred mixtape to [email protected]. The mixtape will include the songs 'Fight to Finish' and 'Fight to Win' and the recording should be between three to five minutes.

The winning submissions will be exhibited on the Felabration website, social media and other platforms determined by the organisers.

Felabration Art Competition

The Felabration 2020 Art Competition requires applicants to create an original piece that interprets the theme through art. The submissions may take the form of a drawing or a piece of artwork.

The best three submissions, determined by members of the festival’s organising company, will be announced on the Felabration website and social media. Additionally, the winning submissions will be exhibited at the New Afrika Shrine, Kalakuta Museum and other venues. Application forms can be downloaded here. Completed forms must be emailed together with the artwork to [email protected]. The email subject line should be 'Felabration 2020 Artwork Competition'.

Note: Entrants below 18 years must obtain permission from their parents or guardians before entering.

Felabration 2020 is scheduled for 14 to 20 October. Held annually since 1998, with the exception of 1999, the event honours the life and impact of the founder of Afrobeat. Over the years, the event has attracted international music stars such as Hugh Masekela (South Africa), Seun Kuti (Nigeria), Femi Kuti (Nigeria), Awilo Logomba (DRC), King Sunny Ade (Nigeria), Asa (Nigeria), 2Baba (Nigeria) and Sauti Sol (Kenya). Apart from the concert, this year’s schedule includes a schools debate and symposium.
