Call for applications: Joburg Theatre senior audiovisual technician

Joburg Theatre is calling on experienced candidates to apply for the position of senior audiovisual technician at its Braamfontein offices in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Joburg City Theatres is an entity of the City of Johannesburg that operates Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein, Roodepoort Theatre and Soweto Theatre.
The position is permanent and the successful candidate will work within the stage department. He or she will earn a basic salary ranging from R22 215.54 to R27 864.81 excluding benefits.
Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Operating control consoles for sound, lighting and video.
- Designing audiovisuals (AV), lighting and sound.
- Compressing, digitalising, duplicating and storing audio and video data.
- Using computers and computer systems (including software and hardware) to programme, writing software, setting up functions, entering data, or processing information, as well as diagnosing and resolving media system problems.
- Programme manual and timecoded shows.
- Archiving shows for future use.
- Consulting producers, event planners and coordinators to coordinate productions and programme ideas and providing the feasibility of ideas in implementing the use of stage technology and space in the theatre and function rooms.
- Enforcing health and safety regulations.
- Inspecting regularly the hanging gear and ensure that it is safe to use and in good repair.
- Ensuring the safety of cables that are attached to all hanging gear.
- Ensuring that AV equipment is in good working order and meets safety requirements.
- Replacing faulty equipment and recommend to senior management to acquire new technology when necessary.
- Drawing up plans for subordinate/s to execute.
- Obtaining, setting up and loading videotapes for scheduled productions.
- Operating both Mac and PC operating systems.
- Allocating work to subordinates and defining performance standards.
- Implementing staff development processes.
- Operating any stage equipment within the theatre when needed.
- Reporting all mechanical faults to the manager and building department and ensuring that faults are rectified in time by following up.
- Setting up AV screens, media servers and all accessories.
- Assessing damaged items and assigning them for repairs.
- Inspecting all equipment after use and before storage.
- Managing AV team productively and efficiently during AV setups.
- Inspecting AV equipment, structures or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
- Ensuring day-to-day management of the AV department.
Requirements
- Grade 12 and a Diploma in Theatre Technology or equivalent.
- Ability to design AV, operate sound mixer, MA-lighting and Digico console and media server.
- Knowledge of Pro Tools, Cubase, Studio1 and QLab programmes.
- Computer literacy.
- Minimum of one to three years of working experience.
- Good verbal and written communication in English.
