Call for applications: Modzi Arts residency in Zambia

The self-funded residency will last from one to three months between May and December. It is a shared space where artists of multiple disciplines can collaborate to cultivate, revive and share ideas.

This is an opportunity for local and international artists to push the boundaries of cross-regional artistic practices in the African context.

Requirements

• Profile image.
• Artist statement describing practice and areas of interest.
• Five images of recent work.
• Statement about what the applicant would like to achieve during the residency (500 words max).
• CV/resume.

Artists will get the opportunity to work from multiple spaces within Modzi Arts, including shared indoor and outdoor spaces. Workspaces are accessible seven days a week with access to WiFi. All communal facilities in the building include a shared kitchen, bathroom facilities, a tool/book library as well as a podcast, DJ production, camera and gallery space.

“Herein lie some of our interests involving a tremendous sense of seeing and interrogating the progressiveness of art within Lusaka and within the region,” Modzi Arts said. “Our space has been fostered by the support of the ANT funding grant by Pro Helvetia Johannesburg financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. With their patronage, the space has evolved into a place for multidisciplinary experimenting, cultural knowledge sharing and presentation of works to new audiences. Modzi Arts looks to crystallise a revolution where artists’ provocative questions of interconnection within our cultural spheres try to dissect obvious assumptions on what purposes art creation serves within society.”

Founded in 2016, Modzi Arts is committed to strengthening the Zambian arts scene. The platform coordinates several regional residencies and professional exchanges with partner organisations. Modzi welcomes artists and researchers working in all disciplines and encourages the sharing of ideas and collaborative approaches. Visiting artists are accommodated in a shared living space and are provided access to galleries, studios, an art archive and a library of books and tools.
