Call for applications: Music In Africa Editorial Officer in Johannesburg

Pan-African non-profit the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) seeks a vibrant music journalist to assume the position of Editorial Officer in Johannesburg, South Africa. The ideal candidate will have strong writing and editorial experience and excellent networking and organisational skills, as well as a passion for African music.
The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will revolve around journalistic duties. However, the Editorial Officer will also undertake strategic responsibilities with the purpose of expanding our online platform and offline projects.
Key roles
- Assist with content production (write, publish and moderate content for the Music In Africa information portal (www.musicinafrica.net).
- Support the editor-in-chief.
- Develop content plans with the editor-in-chief.
- Sub-edit the work of regional editors and contributors, where required.
- Ensure/enforce that writing conforms to Music In Africa’s guidelines and content strategy.
- Take responsibility for assigned beats/themes.
- Attend and review industry events, expos, forums and conferences.
- Where necessary, assist social media activities.
- Prepare newsletter content.
- Build and maintain relationships to enhance content.
- Ensure consistent and organised communication.
- Perform other editorial, journalistic and administrative roles as may be required.
- On occasion, support projects-based work, including:
- Supporting fundraising activities (conceptualisation, proposal writing and editing).
- Writing and editing press releases.
- Working closely with project teams to produce required content.
Requirements
- Relevant tertiary qualification (Diploma/Degree in Journalism, Communications, etc).
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience as an editor/writer (web and/or print)
- Strong management, coordination and organisational skills.
- Excellent networking skills.
- Familiarity with the African music sector and a good network of relevant contacts.
- Knowledge of social networks and how they are being used to drive content.
- Strong knowledge of Content Management Systems, SEO, Google Analytics, social media principles and digital content creation.
- Excellent written skills in English, ideally with sub-editing experience.
- Flawless attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure. Must be able to work long hours, especially when deadlines are looming.
