Call for applications: Residency for deaf artists in the US

The programme provides five deaf artists of various disciplines the opportunity to come together to live, work and share ideas with other native American Sign Language (ASL) signers while advancing their own personal artistic projects.

Requirements

• A resume or biographical statement.
• A work plan – a one-page word or PDF document that clearly and concisely describes what you are working on and what you’d like to accomplish at the Anderson Center.
• Work samples should be recent and include:
  • Composers and musicians: three to five recordings.
  • Performance artists: three short videos excerpts of performances (no videos longer than five minutes).
  • Filmmakers: at least three short film clips (no videos longer than five minutes).
  • Scholars: 10 pages of work, including research abstracts and relevant diagrams.
  • Visual artists: At least 5 images of work (300 dpi or larger).
  • Poets: 10 pages of poetry.
  • Translators: 10 pages of translation and original text.
  • Nonfiction and fiction writers: 10 pages of double-spaced prose.
  • Playwrights & screenwriters: 20-paged excerpt (does not need to be from the beginning).

Selection process

The jury will consider the following:

• Artistic excellence as demonstrated by work samples, resume and artist statement.
• Potential benefit and the impact on their career as demonstrated by the work plan.
• Balance of artistic disciplines, identity, geography, etc within the selected cohort.

Successful applicants will receive the following:

• A $1 100 stipend for the month.
• Reimbursement of up to $500 in travel costs.
• Art-making resources.
• Lodging and studio space.
• Groceries and chef-prepared communal dinners.

To be considered, artists must submit an application through the Anderson Center’s online form via submittable.
