The Edison Studio collective in Rome, Italy, is inviting composers from around the world to submit a composition for the 2020 edition of the Sounds of Silences International Competition of Musical Composition for the Moving Image.
The competition is in collaboration with Romaeuropa Festival 2020 and film archive Cineteca di Bologna.
The competition aims at stimulating musical creativity in its interaction with audiovisual media, particularly for the reinterpretation of historical silent films and the creation of new soundtracks, with a special concern for timbres as in today’s instrumental, electronic and electroacoustic music.
The submission deadline for is 1 October 2020.
Eligibility
- The competition is open to composers from all over the world
- The composer must be below the age of 36.
- The music must be an original composition created before 20 May 2020.
- Entries can be made by an individual or a collective.
- The 2019 winners are not allowed to participate.
Requirements
The following should be sent to [email protected] via WeTransfer:
- A description of the work in English (600 words max).
- A résumé or CV (600 words max).
- Pictures of the individual entrant or group (JPG/JPEG format).
- A preformulated statement signed by the competitors formally declaring that:
- The soundtrack presented is entirely composed by themselves.
- They have not in any way granted the rights to the use of the soundtrack to third parties before the end of the competition.
- They undertake not to publicly present the audiovisual work before the day of the final awards ceremony.
Selection process
An international jury will select three works from among those that have been received. The outcome will be announced on 25 June 2020. Each of the three successful entrants will then be tasked with creating an original soundtrack for one or more films, with a total duration that will not exceed 35 seconds for each finalist. The films will be chosen at random by Edison Studio and the Cineteca di Bologna.
The winners will be announced at a public event scheduled for between October and November 2020 in Rome as part of this year's edition of Romaeuropa Festival.
