Call for participation: SA Streaming Models Survey 2022

The survey/interview forms part of a broader research about live-streaming concert models in South Africa for a study commissioned by IKS.

The survey follows up on the Concerts SA 2020 Digital Futures research report on live music streaming in South Africa. That research was a small-sample snapshot survey, conducted at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

It is anticipated that the aggregated results, and not individual data, will be published in a report that will be made available online. The research team includes Gwen Ansell, Monica Newton, Andre Le Roux, Atiyyah Khan and Jess White.

The survey will help answer questions like:

• What earnings are musicians and other players making from streaming and producing online content?
• How can the music industry and government intervene to assist artists in streaming their music?
• What music genres are being streamed in South Africa?
• How can we improve on the Digital Futures research published in July 2020?

Interested participants should complete the survey here before 23 February.

“Now, we’re revisiting this research, to find out how the landscape has changed and about the experience of platforms and individual musicians currently streaming music from South Africa,” IKS Cultural Consulting said. “We need this information to help inform policymaking, support music makers and lobby for change where it’s needed. We hope to track how the South African live-streaming landscape and its revenue possibilities have changed for performers and platforms over the past year.”

The research takes the form of an email questionnaire, which IKS Cultural Consulting may follow up on in some cases with a case study interview. Participation is voluntary and participants can withdraw at any time without penalty.
