Concerts SA has released the names of the first recipients for the 2022 Digital Mobility Fund. The announcement follows an open call released in January.
The mobility fund is managed by cultural consulting firm Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS). Supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), it is designed for local artists who want to present professional, high-quality performances.
“We only had sufficient funds for 50 grants but stretched around a little bit in our budgets and we came up with 60 grants,” IKS director André Le Roux told Music In Africa. “Thanks to the Norwegian embassy and SAMRO, which came on board, we were able to fund another 40 grants making them 100.”
Concerts SA considered proposals from music professionals for livestreamed or delayed broadcast performances with audiences. Each grant is worth up to R30 000 ($2 000).
Successful applicants include Madala Kunene, Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, The Chanticleer Singers, Madosini, Louis Mhlanga and Bittereinder.
