Deadline approaches for OneBeat applications

The programme, which is open to all musicians regardless of training, targets a number of countries around the world. Eligible African countries include, Senegal, Algeria, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Ghana, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia.

Applicants must be resident and be a citizen of an eligible country. They are also required to be between 19 and 35 years old while attending the program which is set for the later months in the year. Successful applicants, up to 25 this year, are expected to engage one another, the primary goal of the programme being collaboration between innovative musicians.

OneBeat accepts applications from musicians working in a variety of genres. Other professionals are also invited.

“In addition to full-time professional musicians,” notes the OneBeat official website, “we also invite adventurous musicians who double as community organizers, instrument builders, writers, videographers, musicologists, educators, storytellers, dancers, shadow-puppeteers, and more.”

Fellows of the program will take part in a 2-week residency, in which they will be expected to produce new material. A tour then ensues which is expected to cover a further fortnight. As part of their duties during the programme, the selected musicians will teach workshops and engage selected communities.
