NEFCISA

The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud of its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is running a national programme that is creating jobs, addressing skills gaps, and strengthening South Africa's creative industries — in line with the SEF's overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative is recruiting and training participants, matching them with host organisations, and has already placed 1 500 workers across the country — surpassing its original target of 1 000. NEFCISA is delivered through a network of 20 host organisations spanning five provinces, who are actively hosting participants and contributing to work for the common good across South Africa's creative and cultural industries. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

Music In Africa Gender @ Work is a three-year training programme aimed at upskilling and increasing the participation of female professionals in the African music sector. Launched by the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) in April 2019, the programme is connected to the MIAF’s ACCES music conference – a pan-African event held in a different African country every year. This connection enables the programme to reach new participants in a different African country every year. The programme marks the beginning of a more concerted effort by the Foundation to support the participation and inclusion of women in all facets of its programmes and the music sector in Africa as a whole. For cultural and creative practitioners and organisations operating in southern Africa, access to funding remains a major challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a massive impact on government policy, spending and the economy in general, and has seen spending on culture being moved further down the list of priorities. Further, the cultural and creative industries repeatedly cite four main areas where investment is needed for growth, which are increased visibility, mobility including access to new markets, finance and support structures.

DJ Kwele: The Cape Town sound selector building immersive musical journeys

Cape Town-based DJ and sound selector Kwele is steadily establishing herself as one of South Africa’s most promising emerging selectors, earning recognition for performances that prioritise connection, atmosphere and storytelling over predictable playlists. By blending emotion, energy and carefully timed tempo shifts, she has developed an approach that places equal emphasis on musical selection and audience engagement.

DJ Kwele.

Unlike many DJs whose sets remain within a single genre or cater to fixed audience expectations, Kwele approaches every performance as a journey. Rather than simply showcasing the breadth of her music collection, she adapts each set to the mood of the audience, allowing the energy of the room to shape the direction of her performance.

Afro-house forms the foundation of her musical identity, but her sets frequently evolve beyond a single style as she responds to the crowd in real time. The result is an immersive experience in which genres blend naturally, with Kwele acting less as a performer and more as a guide through a carefully constructed sonic narrative.

“It’s less about ‘look what I can play’ and more about 'what does this room need right now',” Kwele said.

That philosophy has become one of the defining characteristics of her work. Rather than focusing on technical exhibition or dramatic transitions, she prioritises creating moments that encourage audiences to move together, making each performance unique to its setting.

Her growing reputation has also been shaped by appearances at community-focused events, including Everybody Loves Sunday and the SSS: Same Sex Saturday Legacy Ball. These performances have demonstrated her commitment to using music as a means of bringing people together, reinforcing her belief in the power of sound to foster connection across diverse audiences.

Beyond the decks, Kwele has expanded her creative footprint through collaborations that connect music with fashion, art and culture. A recent partnership with lifestyle brand Poetry has seen her featured in creative campaigns, highlighting her growing influence within South Africa's broader creative industries and positioning her as a cultural figure whose work extends beyond live performance.

These collaborations reflect an artist whose career is developing across multiple creative disciplines while remaining rooted in music. By working across fashion, community initiatives and cultural projects, Kwele continues to broaden her impact while maintaining the authenticity that has characterised her rise.

As her portfolio continues to expand, Kwele remains focused on curating inclusive spaces and immersive musical experiences that encourage audiences to participate rather than simply observe. Her performances are built around shared moments, where rhythm, emotion and atmosphere converge to create a sense of collective movement.

In an increasingly crowded DJ landscape, Kwele’s willingness to let each audience shape the direction of a set distinguishes her from many of her contemporaries. Some DJs are best experienced through recorded mixes, while others reveal their artistry most fully in front of a live audience. Kwele belongs firmly in the latter category, building performances that are defined not only by the music she plays, but by the connections she creates on the dancefloor.
