Felabration to open with secondary school debate

The competition will pit representatives of 10 selected secondary schools against each other. Among judges for the contest are the actors Dakore Akande and Wale Ojo, and the event will be hosted by the comedian Teju Babyface. Representatives from the schools will be debating the topic “African History Curriculum, Necessity or Not”.

“The Secondary Schools Debates is Felabration’s content that connects the youths to Fela through brainstorming on issues that would have been of interest to Fela back in the days,” says an official statement by the Felabration committee.

“Particular attention is given to the Africa's Perspective, just as Fela did. He was very deliberate at targeting the youths. He knew that the youths, well educated, will change our tomorrow. Felabration is committed to empowering the youths through education. The Secondary Schools Debates is one way of this.”

The winner of the competition will receive a laptop. Second and third placed participants will receive an android tablet each. The Felabration committee will award each school participating in the debate a drum set.

Following this opening event, Felabration will host a public lecture delivered by Professor P. Lumumba. The Kenyan scholar will speak on the topic, “Whither the Pan African dreams, 20 years after Fela, 40 years after FESTAC”.

This year’s Felabration festival, themed ‘Prophecy’, marks the 20th anniversary of the death of the late Afrobeat artist.
