Gambian hip-hop artist Omid Wisdom has urged Gambian youths to take on entrepreneurship to reduce “Back Way”, the local slang for illegal migration to Europe.
Omid Wisdom released a song in memory of Sira 'Chaat' Muundow’, a migrant who died on the perilous back way journey after a severe beating by Libyan kidnappers.
Wisdom also urged the leaders to promote, facilitate, fund and support entrepreneurship for young people in the Gambia in order to reduce the back way problem. He has collaborated with the UK’s campaign I am Not For Sale.
Many Gambians have returned to their country following the exit of the long-term president Yahyah Jammeh who was replaced by Adama Barrow last year.
According to Reuters, "Nearly 2,500 Gambians were flown home by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) last year, most pulled out of prisons in Libya after reports emerged of Africans being sold in slave markets in the lawless country..." At least one report states that almost 1 in 20 migrants in Italy are from the Gambia.
