Ghana: Kofi Bruce shares new two-track pack

The double release boasts Kofi Bruce’s signature blend of traditional highlife rhythms with Afrobeats influences.

Thematically, ‘Phone Date’ paints a picture of the digital age’s unique courtship rituals, including the excitement of first flushes of love and the potential pitfalls of virtual connections.

‘ATM’, on the other hand, centres on relationships driven by material gain. The song exposes the dangers of societal pressures leading to superficial connections.

“Highlife is the heartbeat of Ghanaian music, and it’s important for us to keep it alive while allowing it to grow and evolve,” Kofi Bruce said about his latest. double-release. “With these two songs, I wanted to honour the past but also show how highlife can fit into the present and the sound to shape.”

The releases arrive on the heels of Kofi Bruce’s three-track debut EP Tappers Joint last October.

Hailing from Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region, Kofi Bruce’s sound blends folk, highlife, soul, and jazz. He describes his music, which he calls “palm wine music”, a tribute to the roots of Ghanaian music.

In related news, Ghanaian band Kwan Pa will premiere a new film celebrating the palm wine music genre on 26 October in Accra. Titled Sweet Palmwine and helmed by Wahala Productions, the project – according to frontman Asah Nkansah – strings together stories from the group’s recent six-track EP Palm Wine Music.
