Ghanaian hiplife star Scizo died on 5 January at his base in Nevada, USA. He reportedly succumbed to a short illness.
The news of his death, which was confirmed by multiple local media sources, has been met with an outpouring of grief from fellow musicians and other stakeholders of Ghana’s entertainment fraternity.
Speaking to Music In Africa, hiplife/ Afrobeats artist Edem said he would fondly remember his deceased colleague for his constant encouragement, independent mindset and overall good-natured spirit. He added that Scizo was “an amazing guy and gentle soul who always had a “present smile.”
DJ Ashmen described Scizo as “very nice and very passionate about music”, adding that the artist was “full of life and very outspoken.”
“Rest well, soldier,” 4X4 member Captain Planet tweeted. Producer King of Accra posted: “Wow R.I.P Scizo. I’m pained.”
Born Joseph Kwame Sogli, the rapper and producer burst to fame under the mentorship of veteran hiplife producer Da’Hammer, and courted widespread acclaim within local hip hop circles, particularly for his use of the Ga dialect and compelling storytelling. He also received critical praise for nack for attacking dense themes and combining catchy choruses with thoughtful messaging.
Popular for songs including ‘Ke Shika Le’ and ‘1 Stone’, Scizo went on to record with top names including Sarkodie, Shatta Wale and Kwabena Kwabena, among others.
Scizo’s last collection Highsolation, Vol. 1, was released in 2019.
