Ghana: Music veterans to mentor newcomers

The programme, tagged Future Incubation Project, is organised by the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and announced by the organisation’s director of communications and projects Ahuma Bosco Ocansey. It is part of MUSIGA’s plan to develop the skills of 100 new acts in Ghana’s music industry.

Ocansey said the union would begin a course to help acts develop their business acumen. He said interested artists could register by contacting MUSIGA or the National Film and Television Industry (NAFTI).

“Education is important for them as young ones if they want to advance in their career,” Ocansey said. “Improve on your skills because the world we live in is getting more competitive and evolving. If you rest on your laurels you will be overtaken by events.”

Speaking with local media, Ocansey reminded his audience that it is unlawful for users and radio stations to refuse royalties to artists whose work is deployed to promote business.

By refusing to pay royalties, music users were a source of pain to musicians no longer playing or performing music regularly, he said.
