Ghana: MUSIGA announces new committee

The development was made public on 17 July in a short statement signed by MUSIGA acting president Bessa Simons

The committee, chaired by music educationist and conductor Gertrude Boamah, will handle issues of indiscipline pertaining to its members and recommend sanctions for consideration by MUSIGA's executive council.

Other members that make up the committee, which will also “arbitrate complaints and find solutions to problems of bona fide members”, are lawyer Kingsley Amoakwa, musician Perppy Tsahey, superintendent Freeman Tettey, and Paa Kwesi Holdbrook Smith, a seasoned producer and music promoter.

MUSIGA is home to some 4 500 musicians in Ghana irrespective of genre. Incorporated in December 1975, it operates under the mission of “promoting and preserving Ghanaian culture through education and equipping the Ghanaian musician to be self-reliant, creative and industrious.”

In a related matter, the national executive council (NEC) of the union, for nearly a year, has had to push back the election of new executives due to a number of reasons, most recently restrictions on social gatherings occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.
