Ghana: Republic Spirit to launch new music museum

The museum will support the development and preservation of authentic Ghanaian music. It forms part of the Republic Spirit campaign, an annual event series that includes a business and creative arts conference and a music festival. The RGMM will have varied curations annually in 2022, starting with a fundraising pilot event this December to help kickstart the project.

“The purpose of this entity is to collect, preserve, interpret, and display objects of music significance for the study and education of the public,” a press statement reads.

Owusu-Ansah said that the Republic Spirit campaign emerged from a passion for art, music, fashion, and food, and was created to “engender an expression and celebration of African arts, music and culture on a global level’’.

Additionally, a two-day event, including the Small Business and Creative Arts Conference, is slated for 27 and 28 December. It claims to offer a unique networking opportunity for participants while allowing the relevant transfer of ideas and opportunities for collaborations.

The Republic Spirit Music Festival is an outdoor event that celebrates a unique expression of African culture through music, arts and craft. In addition to contemporary live music, the festival allows for other creative expressions including dance, fashion and cinema, among others. This year’s edition is slated for 29 December at the Untamed Empire on the Spintex Road, with artists across genres and geographies billed to perform.

The RGMM will add to the country’s growing array of repositories dedicated to the documentation of Ghanaian music and art. Last year saw the unveiling of the Pan-African Heritage World Museum, a project geared towards facilitating the rediscovery of African history while fostering solidarity between inhabitants on the continent and in the diaspora. The initiative is expected to be completed in 2022 at an estimated cost of $30m. It will consist of a museum, conference centre, herbal plant farm, cultural village depicting African kingdoms, and sculptures of notable contributors in the areas of sports, entertainment, politics, science and culture.
