Ghana: Watch Kyekyeku and Rocky Dawuni’s Africa Till I Die video

Taken off the Kyekyeku’s latest album, Funky Pangolin, the song was born out of the friendship between the highlife guitarist and multiple Grammy nominee. It is a deep and profound highlife ballad celebrating Africa in the face of frequent negative images.

On the single, Kyekyeku and Rocky Dawuni, who both call Ghana and the West home, tell first-hand the joys of living in Africa – the immense beauty, the energy and resilience of her people, success and positivity that abounds.

“We need to talk about that side of Africa a lot more, sing more, paint more,” Kyekyeku said.​

​As the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment for Africa, Rocky Dawuni has travelled to many nations and attests from his encounters that indeed all life begins in Africa. ‘“People wey I dey meet, places wey I dey go, na ibi you be the mother, Mama Africa,” the artist sings in pidgin.

According to filmmaker Slingshot, who worked on the project, the video “seeks to depict Africa and its beautiful people in its own light, its own words and its very own story and not one portrayed by the skewed perception of media in the West.”

“After the chaos of the last few years, it became even more evident that a good place to visit and spend time was within Africa,” a statement said. “The video was filmed in France and Ghana focusing on the dreams of Kyekyeku in a conversation with Rocky Dawuni on an old toy phone that you still see children playing with in the streets of Accra. It is evident that in those cold empty French streets, Kyekyeku dreams of joining Rocky in Ghana as he performs with his band and enjoys the sunny weather, the bustle and energy of Accra.”​
