IFPI launches first official MENA chart

The chart counts music streaming data from platforms including Anghami, Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify and YouTube, and the top 20 tracks will be announced every Tuesday.

The global recorded music body says the chart covers data in 13 markets across the region including Morocco and the UAE, among others. The chart will be managed by charts compiler BMAT in accordance with the IFPI’s global charts principles and methodologies.

According to an IFPI report, recorded music in the MENA region grew by 35% last year, making it the fastest-growing region globally, with music streaming accounting for more than 95% of that growth.

Smash hit ‘Calm Down’ by Nigerian artist Rema has emerged as the first track to top the chart, while Egyptian artists Farid, Ahmed Saad and Wegz as well as Saudi artist Ayed made the top 10.

“I’d like to thank all of my fans across the region who streamed ‘Calm Down’ and helped it to become the first ever Official MENA Chart No 1,” Rema said. “I am so happy that you are enjoying the song and very proud to be the first artist to reach No 1. Thanks also to the team at my label for their support.”

IFPI CEO Frances Moore said: “The launch of the Official MENA Chart represents a great step forward for this vibrant and growing music market. Music fans can celebrate the performance of their favourite artists and songs in a chart which captures music listening across all major streaming platforms and markets within the region using IFPI’s unique and accurate charts methodology."

Two songs from the official FIFA World Cup soundtrack, ‘Arhbo’ by Ozuna and GIMS as well as ‘Dreamers’ by RedOne and Jung Kook, also made the chart. Shakira’s hit ‘Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)’, originally released for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, charts at No 9, while ‘Tukoh Taka’ by Nicki Minaj, Maluma and Myriam Fares is at No 11.

The chart’s official launch follows a joint memorandum of understanding signed by the IFPI and the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Economy in June. The agreement forms part of a commitment to support the development of the UAE’s recorded music business.
