Imisi Peletu wins NewComma Creative Fund

A monthly microgrant initiative with no strings attached, the fund is open to practising African/Black creatives aged between 18 and 35 years. New Comma says the initiative was born out of a mission to support the upcoming generation of Africa creatives.

The accolade, made public this week, recognises 22-year-old Peletu’s exceptional work on her upcoming track, ‘Twenty One’, a neo soul and gospel-infused composition with musical theatre elements.

“Written with a group of fantastic musicians and her wonderful friends, ‘Twenty One’ is a coming-of-age story that earnestly describes the raw, honest and genuine emotions and feelings that come with self-discovery, insecurity and actualisation in young adulthood,” a statement reads.

Reacting to her victory, Peletu, an alumna of the University of Kent and a 2023 contestant of The Voice UK talent series, expressed gratitude to NewComma for their support.

To date, NewComma has awarded over $5 000 to more than 20 recipients in various countries, including Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Angola, Tanzania, Botswana and Kenya.
