Johannesburg has new FM radio station

Star FM 91.9 kicked off its morning broadcast show with radio duo Greg and Lucky. “We were counting the sleeps until today [1 July] and we’re really amped to be working together on radio again,” Lucky said. “We were watching the clock and although we should never wish for time to pass, the last few minutes before our 6am start were some of the longest minutes in our lives.”

Star FM 91.9 programme manager Caren du Preez said: “I’m so glad that the day has arrived and that we are now up and running. The entire Star FM 91.9 team has put in a lot of work ahead of today and it’s a relief to be bringing our different, fun, authentic, friendly and inclusive mix of content to air.”

Besides Greg and Lucky, the station boasts a line-up of young and fresh radio talent including Mzi, Mantsoe Pout, Mark Mdluli, Adrian Naidoo, Sivan Pillay, Lucy Bodumele, Shaun, Justin and Sibs.

Du Preez added: “Listening to Star FM 91.9 is going to be a fun experience, one that will keep the listeners plugged in to what is happening in their neighbourhood, while showcasing the best in local music and more.”

Star FM 91.9 is a youth-driven community radio station that aims to bring fun and be inclusive and real, the station said. “We are also passionate about supporting future radio superstars, which we aim to do through our Radio Training Academy, previously the Hot 91.9FM Radio Training Academy,” it said. “The free six-month course is a sustainable mentorship course feeding young talent to the broadcasting industry and an example of our commitment to our community and uplifting the youth. The academy offers an intensive hands-on programme with weekly lectures, which due to COVID-19 safety precautions will resume in 2022.”
