Kofi Kinaata releases song on COVID-19

The song, titled ‘Corona Virus’ and produced by Two Bars, was released on 18 September and is available on various digital platforms.

On ‘Corona Virus’, Kofi Kinaata addresses the social and economic impact of COVID-19 on Ghana, detailing how much things have changed. He also debunks false perceptions about remedies for the illness, such as the use of seawater as a cure. Additionally, Kinaata admonishes strict adherence to preventive health protocols including social distancing, wearing of nose masks, the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers and washing hands under soap and running water.

Though Ghana's government has relaxed social restrictions that were put in place in the wake of the virus, including the reopening of the Kotoka International Airport on 1 September, the public is advised to continue to observe health protocols recommended by professionals to help alleviate the pandemic's effect within the country. With the song, Kinaata hopes to reiterate this message, particularly to followers of his music.

The accompanying video of ‘Corona Virus’, shot on the coasts of Ghana, was directed by Director Abass. It shows people in various social situations observing COVID-19 preventive protocols.

Over his career, which started in his native Takooradi and then under the mentorship of dancehall singer Samini, Kofi Kinaata has cultivated a reputation in the country for his biting social commentary. Songs like ‘Things Fall Apart’, ‘Susuka’ (2016) and ‘Confession’ (2017) have won him nationwide acclaim and laurels. At this year’s VGMAs, he won Songwriter of the Year for a record third time.
