Malawi’s Peter Mawanga to take African spiritual music to the USA

According to his manager, Thobekile Makwakwa, Peter is set to perform at perform at the University of Missouri-St Louis, Washington State University, Skagit Valley College and in Washington DC. “This tour serves as a big opportunity not only for Peter, but for the development of the arts in Malawi. We believe this tour will also help promote Peter’s upcoming album, Nyimbo Za Mulungu, which aims at preserving traditional hymns that have been sung in Malawi for decades,” said Makwakwa.

Singing in his native tongue, Peter’s music is globally recognized yet intrinsically Malawian. Despite his musical success, Peter has all the while remained dedicated to the causes that matter to him, working closely with organizations like SOS, UNICEF and Plan Malawi to mentor orphaned and vulnerable children through music workshops and raise awareness of AIDS.

Backed by his band the Amaravi Movement, Mawanga has previously shared stages with international artists such as Grammy-winning American jazz musician Earl Klugh, Zimbabwean icon Oliver Mtukudzi, local star Wambali Mkandawire and violinist Andrew Finn McGill. It’s not his first tour overseas; in 2014 he peformed in Glasgow, Scotland. He has released three albums to date and is working on a project to preserve spiritual hymns, which he plans to release later this year.
