Mauritius: MOMIX 2018 line-up announced

The acts include Eric Triton , Lakshman Das Baul (India), Musa Mushiane (South Africa), Kiltir Maloya (Reunion Island), Mathieu Carosin Drum School (Mauritius), Pierre Nesta (France), Zilwala (Mauritius) and Babani Records (Mauritius).

MOMIX director Stephan Rezannah told Music In Africa that the line-up selection would facilitate an exchange of culture and knowledge between local and international musicians.

“The creation of this music fair aims to promote the local musical scene and showcase the current musical culture being manifested on our island and the Indian Ocean,” he said.

“This musical platform is a stepping stone for us to interact with our foreign counterparts and present our music and its artistic and social rhythms in the best way possible.”

Rezannah said the selection of artists was a collaborative effort between MOMIX, the Indian Ocean Music Market (IOMMA), Moshito Music Conference and Exhibitions (South Africa), Indiearth (India), Yal Production (France), Production (France) and the EU.

Rezannah said the MOMIX team had experienced a number of teething problems during the market's first edition last year. He said the 2018 edition would see improvements in terms of organisation and logistics.

“Last year we found it very hard coordinating the various events at the different sites,” he said. “This year we have centralised all events and trained our staff. We expect a huge turnout unlike last year, because the event is in the heart of Mauritius, which makes its accessible to the locals.”

Apart from showcases, the two-day event will also feature speed networking, industry presentations and professional training for those who are active in the Mauritian music sector.

The topics to be covered include scenic coaching, artist management, production management and music arrangement.
