The Mic: Africa opens applications ahead of Season 2

The competition, which will be held on the Take Back the Mic (TBTM) digital platform, is open to creatives including rappers, DJs, street dancers, spoken-word poets and aerosol graffiti artists. It will reward the ultimate winner with a cash prize and a trophy.

Three rising hip hop stars will be selected to compete from each of the following countries:

• Ethiopia
• Ghana
• Kenya
• Mauritius
• Morrocco
• Nigeria
• Rwanda
• Senegal
• South Africa
• Tanzania

Last year, Nigerian rapper Fecko emerged as the show’s inaugural winner. He took home $25 000 and a VIP trip for two to Kigali, Rwanda, courtesy of the Rwanda Convention Bureau.

“I’m honoured to represent my country as the winner of the inaugural season of The Mic: Africa,” he said upon his announcement. “Uplifting my community and taking my career to the next level are my top priorities right now. Africa is the future and I’m on a mission to show the world what it means to be a limitless African youth.”

TBTM is part of Take Back the Mic: The World Cup of Hip Hop, a global reality competition that seeks to discover and promote hip hop acts. The contest first launched in Kingston, Jamaica, and has so far been held in Medellin, Colombia, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
