“New Light” is a debut EP from Modola, a Nigerian artist, and it is a small introduction to her style of Afropop music. The EP contains six songs and can be defined as Afropop with some influences of pop and R&B sounds. It is not an experimental or dramatic piece of music, and instead, it is more focused on the simplicity of its songs and production quality, offering a clear insight into the style of the artist.
The quality of the production is based on its rhythmic beats and hooks, which are easy to follow and listen to. The majority of the instrumentals are quite simple, and this helps to create a uniform style throughout the EP, with some songs sounding quite similar to one another, which can make the listening experience quite uniform at times.
The lyrics of the songs are quite varied and cover different themes, such as ambition and independence, as well as the importance of living in the present and avoiding unnecessary stress in one’s life. These are quite common themes in Afropop music, and they are delivered in a quite simple way, which makes it easy to connect with the songs and the artist.
Vocally, Modola has taken a very calm and controlled performance. The focus seems to be more on the rhythm and the melody rather than the power in the vocals. It is a good fit for the laid-back nature of the production. While the performance has been good for the overall feel of the EP, there are moments where more change in the vocals would have added more variety between the songs.
While the EP is very short, it is good in the sense that it is an introduction and nothing more. It does not allow for much in the way of experimentation. However, the EP does show a direction and sound for the artist going forward.
While the EP does show promise, it does not do much in the way of pushing the boundaries and staying within the comfort zone of the Afropop genre. It is a good start and something that could be taken in a number of ways in the future.
