The Music Business Registry this week launched the community-based .MUSIC top-level domain and verified MusicID.
The initiative aims to ensure a secure online space for artists and organisations while addressing concerns about impersonation and AI misuse.
Founded and led by Constantine Roussos, .MUSIC is backed by a major international coalition representing over 95% of global music consumption.
Roussos said the .MUSIC domain and its connected MusicID will provide a “trusted, secure, and authentic music-centric internet where the global music community can safely connect, engage, transact and thrive.”
According to Marina Roussou, who serves as executive director of id.MUSIC, the exclusive music identity provider (IDP) for the .MUSIC domain, the launch allows the music industry to reclaim its digital presence and safeguard against impersonation and fraud.
Industry leaders, including representatives from bodies like the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) and the Grammys oversight body, the Recording Academy, have expressed strong support for the move.
“As a domain for the global music community, available only to verified artists, companies and organisations active in the music ecosystem, .MUSIC will be a valuable tool, strengthening trust and assuring authenticity. IFPI has been a longstanding supporter of this initiative,” IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley said.
“CISAC has been a longstanding supporter of the .MUSIC initiative and we are delighted to see this ambitious project reaching the finishing line and coming to fruition,” CISAC director general Gadi Oron said.
On his part, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said: “From its inception, the project has sought to provide a safe and reliable digital domain for music creators, and it will foster more trust and security for our entire music ecosystem.”
