Nearly 1 in 5 Billboard Hot 100 Hits from 2022 sampled – Tracklib report

Compiled by Tracklib, the annual report takes a deep dive into the impact of sampling across the music industry, summarising the latest stats, top trends and stories to give insight into sampling's role in the culture of today's music.

The use of samples has gradually increased over the past three years, with a 31% increase in samples used in total, according to the report.

“We have seen genre shifts, shifts in how artists utilise samples and who they pay homage to through their samples, and changes in how new technologies are utilised to share and discover samples,” the company said.

The study includes other key insights including topics such as How the 2000’s Have Become the Most Sampled Decade, Upstages the 90’s, Sampling from Dance Music is More Popular Than Ever, R&B Has Dethroned Hip-Hop as the Most Sampled Genre, and Sample Drill is One of the World's Most Fast-growing Subgenres.

The use of samples has become acceptable in official soundtracks used for the World Cup. It also notes American megastar Beyoncé’s use of samples in her latest album Renaissance.

Elsewhere, the report singles out how stems have become important with their growing availability to producers.

Now in its fifth edition, Tracklib’s State of Sampling report has gained more recognition over the years and is often quoted by various publications in the music industry. The report previously tracked genre, average year of tracks sampled, highly sampled tracks, social-media platform's impact on sampling, and other discussion around trending topics related to sampling.
