Nigeria: Adekunle Gold shares new single Coco Money
18 Jul 2025 - 13:22
Nigerian Afropop artist Adekunle Gold has released a new single titled ‘Coco Money’, an anthem that celebrates success, freedom, and resilience.
The high-energy track follows the heartfelt ballad ‘Obimo’, but shifts in tone with sun-soaked Afro-fusion beats, produced by Nigerian hitmakers Niphkeys and Seyifunmi. ‘Coco Money’ features a bold interpolation of Rihanna’s iconic line from ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’, reimagined as a rhythmic hook, and blends Adekunle Gold’s signature lyrical flair with lush orchestration, violin layers, and electronic vocal textures.
‘Coco Money’ also marks a cultural milestone by incorporating the traditional Elegbe call-and-response riff, a first for a contemporary Afropop single. Deeply rooted in Fuji music, the riff adds percussive grit and pays homage to Yoruba street culture.
Lyrically, the track is a mix of swagger and substance. From the hypnotic refrain, “Kowope, Kowope — bitch better have my money,” to the Yoruba proverb “Ase to ba d’eko waa ko’gbon” (when you get to Lagos, you’ll learn how to be smart), Adekunle Gold critiques misplaced priorities while championing the hustle and wisdom of West African identity. Themes of prosperity, wit, and critique blend seamlessly in a track that’s both socially aware and ready for the dance floor.
Adekunle Gold Foundation launches 5 Star Care
Coinciding with the release of Coco Money, Adekunle Gold has launched the Adekunle Gold Foundation and its first major initiative, 5 Star Care, a free health insurance programme for 1 000 Nigerians living with sickle cell disease.
Launched on World Sickle Cell Day, the initiative is supported by the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), the Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI), and the Lagos State Ministry of Health. Beneficiaries will receive access to routine care, emergency services, and long-term medical support.
“I’ve lived with sickle cell all my life,” Adekunle Gold said. “This foundation is about giving others the kind of care, dignity, and hope I always wished for. Everyone deserves 5-star care.”
