NEFCISA

The Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) is proud of its partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) as a Strategic Implementing Partner (SIP) for its Social Employment Fund (SEF). Through this collaboration, MIAF is running a national programme that is creating jobs, addressing skills gaps, and strengthening South Africa's creative industries — in line with the SEF's overarching goal to generate work for the common good and build community value through employment, social contribution, and inclusive economic participation. Operating under the banner NEFCISA (National Employment Facility for Creative Industries in South Africa), the initiative is recruiting and training participants, matching them with host organisations, and has already placed 1 500 workers across the country — surpassing its original target of 1 000. NEFCISA is delivered through a network of 20 host organisations spanning five provinces, who are actively hosting participants and contributing to work for the common good across South Africa's creative and cultural industries. Key Objectives: Support employment and entrepreneurship in the creative industries. Offer skills development and training programmes. Foster partnerships between public and private creative sectors. Promote South African creativity at both provincial and national levels Foster community development through social contribution.

For cultural and creative practitioners and organisations operating in southern Africa, access to funding remains a major challenge. The COVID-19 pandemic has also had a massive impact on government policy, spending and the economy in general, and has seen spending on culture being moved further down the list of priorities. Further, the cultural and creative industries repeatedly cite four main areas where investment is needed for growth, which are increased visibility, mobility including access to new markets, finance and support structures.

The event will include exhibitions, masterclasses, investment forums, business pitching sessions, film screenings and live performances.

The event, organised under the African Export-Import Bank’s (Afreximbank) CANEX programme, will include exhibitions, masterclasses, investment forums, business pitching sessions, film screenings and live performances. Its programme also features initiatives focused on financing creative enterprises, intellectual property (IP) protection and access to international markets.

Running throughout the four days, the CANEX Exhibition will provide a platform for creative entrepreneurs, brands and businesses to exhibit and sell their products. Other exhibitions include Inheritance: Artists Across Generations, which will showcase established, mid-career and emerging visual artists, and Threads of a Nation, a fashion installation tracing more than 50 years of Nigerian fashion.

The programme will also include the CANEX Book Fair, the Luxury Fashion Xchange and a Creative Economy Technology Showcase and Innovation Lab highlighting African-led digital solutions for content creation, distribution and monetisation.

The CANEX Music Factory 2.0, scheduled for 5 to 7 November, will combine a music business lab with a songwriting camp. The CANEX Deal Room, also running from 5 to 7 November, will connect creative projects with potential financiers and investors.

Finance and investment will feature prominently in the programme, with sessions examining how creative businesses can secure funding and prepare for investment. These include Financing Creativity: Unlocking Investment in African IP, presented by CANEX Creations Inc., and a masterclass on becoming investment-ready through the MANSA platform and CAMELS framework.

The programme will also feature a deal-structure roundtable for bankers, investors and family offices, alongside creative pitch sessions in which small and medium-sized enterprises will present projects to financiers and industry experts.

Intellectual property will be another focus, with an IP Rights Summit examining ways to strengthen protection frameworks. Other sessions will address AI, animation, authorship and ethics, as well as the role of technology in reshaping creative industries.

The opening day will include workshops and masterclasses on short-form storytelling, podcasting, independent music branding, fashion business development, African textiles and the food export value chain. A Confederation of African Football (CAF) symposium will also form part of the programme.
