Nigeria: CKay’s Love Nwantiti surpasses 1bn Spotify streams

Released in 2019 on the EP CKay the First, the song began as a modest regional hit before gaining widespread international attention. Blending Afrobeats rhythms with a melodic, emotive delivery, the track contributed to what CKay has described as “Emo-Afrobeats”, a style that merges African percussion with expressive lyrical themes. The title, which translates to “sweet gentle love” in Igbo, reflects the song’s focus on romantic yearning.

‘Love Nwantiti’ grew steadily in popularity, fuelled by social media challenges, user-generated content, and a series of international remixes. It has since appeared on millions of playlists, maintaining global traction. According to Spotify data, listeners in countries including the US, India, Indonesia, Brazil and the United Kingdom have continued to stream the track in significant numbers in recent weeks.

The billion-stream milestone places CKay alongside a small group of African acts whose work has crossed this threshold. These include collaborative releases involving Nigerian artists such as Drake’s ‘One Dance’ (featuring Wizkid and Kyla), Future’s ‘Wait For U’ (featuring Drake and Tems), Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ (with Selena Gomez), as well as Tyla’s solo hit ‘Water’.

Unlike those collaborations, CKay’s achievement comes from a solo release, underscoring his individual contribution as a songwriter and performer.

“‘Love Nwantiti’ is more than a viral hit; it is a cultural reset,” the statement reads, highlighting the song’s role in expanding the reach of contemporary African music.
