Nigeria: Davido's A Good Time reaches 1 billion streams
Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido’s sophomore album has now surpassed one billion streams across major streaming platforms, including Apple Music, YouTube and Spotify, among others.
Columbia Records UK made the announcement on Twitter on 28 July: “Huge congratulations to @davidoofficial – A Good Time has officially reached over 1 billion streams," the post reads.
A Good Time was recorded in Atlanta and released under the musician’s label Davido Music Worldwide and Sony Music in November last year. The 17-track album comprises hits such as ‘If’, ‘Fall’, ‘Assurance’, ‘Blow My Mind’ and ‘Risky’, and it features international artists, including Chris Brown, Summer Walker, Naira Marley, Zlatan and Gunna, among others.
In February, the album was certified platinum in South Africa and the US. ‘Fall’ was also among the top 100 most Shazam-searched singles in the US in January last year, according to Rolling Stone magazine. In the following month it became the longest-charting pop song by a Nigerian musician in Billboard history.
In April, Davido told CNN that proceeds from his latest single ‘D&G’ featuring Summer Walker would be directed towards COVID-19 research. His fiancée Chioma Avril Rowland had tested positive for the virus in March.
"I was on tour, she was in London with my son. When we all came back to Nigeria, we were, like, because we have travel history, I think it's best we get tested,” Davido said. “We had no symptoms. Nobody in the house had symptoms. Out of all 34 of us that got tested, she was the only one that came out positive, which was crazy to us.”
‘D&G’ has now amassed more than eight million views on YouTube and the musician recently made a guest appearance on US TV programme The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Meanwhile, Davido is expected to release his third LP entitled A Better Time this year.
