Nigeria: Mayorkun marks 10 years in music with new single ‘Kaluba’

Mayorkun, who emerged in 2016 with his breakout single ‘Eleko’, was discovered by fellow Nigerian artist Davido and subsequently signed to his DMW label. Over the past 10 years, he has established himself as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s Afrobeats scene, releasing a string of successful singles and albums while building an international audience.

‘Kaluba’, a Nigerian slang term for money, combines Afrobeat influences with an upbeat production and lyrics centred on Mayorkun’s experiences and career. The song reflects on his progress over the past decade while looking towards the next stage of his career.

The release follows Mayorkun’s recent appearance alongside FOLA on Davido’s ‘B4 B4’, adding to his visibility as he enters his 10th year in the music industry.

The milestone has also coincided with a change in his appearance. Mayorkun has cut his trademark dreadlocks and introduced a new hairstyle, presenting the change as part of a broader personal and creative reset.

His career began in 2016 when ‘Eleko’ gained widespread attention and established him as an emerging artist. Since then, he has released music that has contributed to the development of contemporary Nigerian pop and Afrobeats, while maintaining a strong connection with his audience.
