Nigerian singer Waje has partnered with Web3 streaming platform Gala Music to provide fans with early access to her upcoming EP before being released on other digital portals.
The move, which follows the release of her music video ‘I Promise’ on the platform in March, forms part of an ongoing vision by Gala Music to offer musicians new opportunities “in the growing ownership economy.” Gala Music aims to allow their artists to directly engage with their fans while providing enhanced security and transparency in music distribution and rights management.
Under the arrangement, Waje is releasing four singles – ‘Worries’, ‘Odo’, ‘With You’, and ‘Energy’ – on the platform. The tracks, steeped in Afrobeats and pop fusion, speak to themes ranging from love to dance.
According to a statement, Waje’s selection of Gala Music for her EP launch signifies her pioneering role in leveraging emerging technologies for music dissemination, audience interaction and equitable royalty allocation.
“Working with Gala Music has been an amazing experience, seamless and very transparent,” Waje said. “The whole team has been truly supportive and I am quite happy the platform is open to African artists, giving us full power to bring our music, merch and other content closer to the core fans.”
Waje, who has been making music for over a decade, is behind five albums. In September last year, she was named, alongside other Nigerian celebrities, as a UNICEF champion for child rights advocacy.
Launched in February 2022 by Gala Games, Gala Music uses blockchain technology to create a decentralised platform that “fosters direct artist-fan interactions”, and ensures artists have “the freedom and support they need to thrive.” Notable artists like US rapper Snoop Dogg and singer Jordin Sparks have hosted their music and engaged with their fanbase on the platform.
