Olamide to drop seventh album in seven years
On 17 November, the music industry will receive a new Olamide album, as announced by the Nigerian artist on social media. Titled Lagos Na Wa, it is the rapper’s seventh solo album in seven years.
Starting in 2011 with the release of Rapsodi, the rapper has released an album each year. The album was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 2012 Headies awards. The consistency of his releases has meant, in terms of albums, that he is the most prolific rapper of his generation in Nigeria.
Following Rapsodi, Olamide left the Coded Tunes label and released his sophomore album YBNL under his own YBNL record label. In 2013, he released Baddest Guy Ever Liveth. That album won Album of the Year at the Headies.
Street OT, Eyan Mayweather and The Glory followed in consecutive years. In 2015, he worked with Phyno on the collaborative album 2 Kings.
The forthcoming Lagos Na Wa takes its title from a 1990s Nigerian comedy film, and its album art is minimalist, using yellow and black bands, which are the colours of the Lagos’s public transportation buses. According to a tracklist released by the ‘Owo Blow’ rapper, usual collaborators Phyno and Reminisce will make an appearance on the album, as will Timaya.
Ahead of the album, the single ‘Wo’ has been released. Writing about the song on this platform, IfeOluwa Nihinlola described it as Olamide’s “dog-whistle to his fans on the streets.”
