Olamide is undoubtedly one of Nigeria’s top rappers and performers. Since his debut in the music scene in 2010 he has churned out hits and looks set to continue to do so. He released his fourth single this year, titled ‘Pawon’, on Wednesday. He records mostly in Yoruba, his native tongue.
The multiple award-winning rapper uses ‘Pawon’ (Kill Them) as a call for beautiful women to ‘pawon’ with their booties and sexy moves. The track, produced by Craker Mallo, is a party starter. With its pulsating beat and catchy chorus, it is a new anthem for the Nigerian 'legwork' dance that has been the rave for many in recent months, shuffling in a style also known as zanku.
This is Olamide’s latest single since ‘Oil & Gas,’ released in May, which is more like a song of solicitation from the rich in Nigeria to put the money where it can help the less privileged. It is also a song filled with name-dropping and praise singing, released barely three weeks after the mellow tune, ‘Spirit.’ He also featured on Fuse ODG's collaborative cypher track 'Cool Down', alongside fellow rappers Joey B, Kwamz and Flava.
Olamide must be hoping this new single will hit the right notes with his fans who are distracted by a crop of young and flamboyant artists like Zlatan Ibile and Naira Marley, who are bringing new styles to the fast-moving Nigerian entertainment scene.
