Popular Kenyan radio station launches new music fest

The line-up includes Yemi Alede, Sauti Sol, Khaligraph Jones, King Kaka, The Kansoul, Fena Gitu and Willy Pozze.

The festival is the brainchild of Radio Maisha, which is owned by the Standard Group, a media organisation with investments in print, TV and radio.

Standard Group head of radio Tom Japanni said Choma Na Ngoma would take place every year and provide the company's presenters with an opportunity to interact with listeners.

“If you all like the best that Africa has to offer musically, if you are looking for a way to usher in Madaraka Day [Independence Day] in style and you’re a sucker for finger-licking African grills, then Choma na Ngoma is the place for you,” Japanni said.

“Come down to the KICC and let’s create something beautiful – the more the merrier. We shall ensure ample parking space, enough security and a heavenly experience under the African sky.”

Since launching in 2013, Radio Maisha has become a household name in Kenya and is known for playlisting contemporary African music.

Last year, in a survey conducted by GeoPoll, the station was named the second most listened to radio station in Kenya with an audience share of 12.8%. The station was second only to Radio Citizen, which had a share of 16.2%.
