South African Afro-house artist and producer Prince Kaybee has signed with international electronic music label PLAYY. Records and is set to release a new single, ‘Heno Babayo’, on 26 June.
The signing marks a new chapter in the career of the musician, whose real name is Kabelo Motsamai. Prince Kaybee previously released music through Universal Music South Africa and has established himself as one of the leading figures in South African dance music.
Over the past decade, he has built a catalogue that includes hits such as ‘Club Controller’, ‘Banomoya’ and ‘Uwrongo’. The latter was included in TIME magazine’s list of the 10 Best Songs of 2020. He has also collaborated with several prominent artists, including Lady Zamar, Busiswa, TNS, Shimza, Black Motion and Ami Faku.
Prince Kaybee first gained national recognition in 2015 after winning Masters of Spin, a DJ and music production competition broadcast on SABC 1. The victory helped launch his professional music career and led to wider exposure within the South African music industry.
Before pursuing music full-time, Motha had hoped to become a professional footballer and was associated with Bloemfontein Celtic. Those ambitions ended following a knee injury, after which he turned his attention to music.
Since then, he has received numerous industry accolades, including several South African Music Awards (SAMAs), where he won categories such as Male Artist of the Year, Best Dance Album and Album of the Year. He has also won Best Dance Album at the Metro FM Music Awards and earned multiple Song of the Year honours at the DStv Mzansi Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Internationally, Prince Kaybee received recognition through a Best Collaboration award at the Soundcity MVP Awards Festival in Nigeria for the single ‘Gugulethu’, as well as nominations from the African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA).
His upcoming single, ‘Heno Babayo’, is described as an Afro-house production built around layered percussion, melodic synthesiser arrangements and vocal harmonies. The track is expected to be the first release under his new partnership with PLAYY. Records.
The release comes as Prince Kaybee continues to expand his presence both within South Africa and internationally, building on a career that has helped popularise Afro-house music beyond the continent.
