SA: Bassline co-owner Paige Jean Holmes dies

Holmes, who worked across dance, arts management and artist development, began dancing at the age of six and trained at the Johannesburg Art and Ballet School. At 17, she competed internationally and was recognised by renowned British ballerina Dame Margot Fonteyn.

She later became a principal dancer with CAPAB in Cape Town before joining PACT at the State Theatre and Free Flight Dance Company.

Holmes and Brad worked closely with the Music In Africa Foundation (MIAF) on several partnerships involving Bassline Fest and the Music In Africa Conference for Collaborations, Exchange and Showcases (ACCES).

“What I will remember most is her genuine love for the arts and for people. She worked quietly but made a tremendous impact, often bringing people together in ways that made a real difference. Her presence will be deeply missed,” MIAF executive director Eddie Hatitye said.

Holmes met Brad through Bassline Jazz Club, and the couple shared almost 28 years together. She became a 50% shareholder in Bassline in 2000 and played a key role in the organisation’s development.

In later years, she used her experience as a performer to support other artists through Mind, Body and Voice, Health & Wellness Coaching and Lessac Kinesensics. Her clients included Nakhane, Msaki, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Maleh and Brandon Aura.

She is survived by her husband, Brad, and their son, Miles Earle Holmes.

A memorial service will be held on 3 October 2026 at the John Kani Theatre at the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg. The service will begin at 11am.
