12 Aug 2024 - 07:48
Crown Gospel Music Awards founder and Ukhozi FM presenter Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule has passed away at a local hospital in Durban, South Africa. She was 52.
Zanele, who succumbed to lung cancer, was undergoing minor surgery. Sometime in April, the presenter fell ill and could not finish her show as she experienced challenges with her voice.
The news about Zanele’s death was confirmed in a statement by her husband Mpendulo Nkambule on 12 August.
“It is with a heavy heart that we the Nkambule and Mbokazi family announce the passing of our dearly beloved Ms Zanele Mbokazi-Nkambule, founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards and UKhozi FM radio personality,” Nkambule said. “She departed to be with the Lord in the early hours of 12 August 2024 at Parklands Hospital. We are grateful for all the prayers, love and support we received throughout her illness. The family would appreciate privacy as we navigate through this challenging time.”
South Africa artists and music industry players took to social media to convey their condolences following news of Zanele’s passing.
Ukhozi FM boss Sbongi Ngcobo wrote: “I would like to thank Ukhozi FM listeners; they were with us on this journey, and she was in their prayers. I ask people to give the family space and be responsible on social media regarding what they write about Zanele’s death.”
DJ Sbu wrote: “We send our condolences to Mama Zanele Mbokazi’s family upon her passing.”
Artist and journalist Ayabonga Kekana wrote: “Rest in peace Mam’Zanele Mbokazi.”
Born on 7 November 1971 in Durban, Zanele studied at the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal), earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and politics, followed by a BA Honours degree in media and communications. She also obtained a PR diploma from Damelin. Her career in the media began in the 1990s with appearances on reality TV shows and radio programmes. She presented gospel music shows and talk shows on Ukhozi FM and later worked as a news and current affairs presenter for SABC 1.
In 1999, she founded Mirror PR and Events, a company specialising in event management, communications, and media strategies. Through this company, she produced top local and international events, including the Crown Gospel Music Awards. Zanele also hosted several TV shows, including Shine and Khwezela/Rekindle with Zanele Mbokazi. After a 23-year hiatus, she returned to radio in 2023, presenting on Ukhozi FM again.
