SA: Digital Maskandi compilation brings established and emerging artists together
10 Sep 2026 - 09:30
Durban Media House and Africori Music Group have announced Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, a forthcoming compilation bringing together established Maskandi artists and performers from other genres in a series of cross-generational and cross-regional collaborations.
The compilation features musical backgrounds from Sjava (pictured), Blxckie and Lowfeye of The Qwellers.
The project seeks to explore how maskandi can engage with contemporary sounds while retaining elements central to the genre, including guitar-driven arrangements, lyricism and storytelling. The compilation incorporates influences from hip-hop, pop, Xigaza, Afro-soul and folk music.
The idea for the project was developed by Ntuthuko Mtshali, who has worked with the Maskandi community for several years. His work in the genre has included projects that have received recognition at the South African Music Awards, including two Record of the Year awards and a Music Video of the Year award.
The compilation features maskandi artists including Mzukulu, Dr Buselaphi, Saliwa, Jaiva Zimnike and Menzi. They are joined by artists from other musical backgrounds, including Sjava, Blxckie and Lowfeye of The Qwellers.
According to the organisers, the project is intended to bring together artists from different regions and generations while allowing their respective musical and linguistic identities to inform the collaborations.
The first release from the compilation, ‘Too Much’, is scheduled for 11 September and features Mzukulu and Blxckie.
The song combines maskandi guitar leads with Spanish guitar influences and saxophone, and centres on the intensity of romantic feelings. The track brings Mzukulu’s vocal style together with Blxckie’s melodic approach and hip-hop influences.
‘Too Much’ is the first release from Digital Maskandi Vol. 1, with further collaborations expected as the compilation is rolled out.
The project positions maskandi as a continuing part of South Africa’s contemporary music landscape, using collaborations with artists from different genres and generations to explore new musical directions while retaining elements associated with the tradition.
‘Too Much’ will be available on digital platforms from 11 September.
