SA: Joburg Theatre to stage 2022 World Sound Concert

Launched in 2019, the event returns after a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Confirmed artists include Khanyisile Mthetwa, Ziza Muftic, uKhoiKhoi, Sun Xa Experiment, Dudu Makhoba and and Michael Jiyane.

Mthetwa will perform on 26 August alongside Peter Cartwright on piano. They will be joined on the same day by award-winning jazz vocalist, pianist and composer Ziza Muftic, who has performed with many celebrated local jazz musicians.

Speaking to Music In Africa, Mthetwa said she was extremely excited that she would be performing music from her SAMA-nominated album African Bird. “My music has been described as urban classical as you can hear different genres such as jazz, R&B and soul all weaved into the music in a classical format.

“I will be performing music composed by women, people of colour and will also be performing two new pieces that have not been recorded yet. Audiences will also hear my South African debut performance of a piece for beatbox flute. As in my album, I will also recite poetry that reflects on social justice issues. Audiences are in for a sonic journey unlike any other.”

Muftic said: “Fans can expect a unique blend of balkan and South African styles. I will be supported by a band of incredible and highly-skilled jazz musicians. I will be performing original music from my two albums and some covers. I promise fans to have a wonderful time in a world-class theatre.”

uKhoiKhoi and Sun Xa Experiment will stage their performance on 27 August. Concert goers will experience uKhoiKhoi’s use of electronic instruments fused with poetry, chants and dynamic vocals to create evocative sublime music performances. Fans can also expect Sun Xa Experiment’s spiritual performances that include a versatile contemporary African trance dances.

The 28 August leg will feature Makhoba and Jiyane. Fans will no doubt be left in awe of Makhoba’s soothing and precious vocal tone. Having just returned from a European tour, Jiyane is nominated for this year's Mzantsi Jazz Awards for his album, Umdali.

Makhoba said: “I’m excited to get an opportunity where I will perform my original compositions and some covers. My band and I are working very hard to deliver a memorable performance that will make all the fans to enjoy the concert.”
